2 year old system, tried system restore once, it did work, but now system restore has no other options to restore to...

Need it for Vista basic... The driver stating missing or corrupt... Can't do install of driver without a CD...

Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows Vista provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks or for burning dvd or cd-rw disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd. party recording & dvd decoding software is required.

and follow the instructions posted.

There is also a fix posted in the STICKY at the top of this forum. It includes a file from Microsoft that will "delete the upper and lower filters". You may use it instead of the first fix if you so desire.
