Not sure if this an IDE connection, but it's hardware on a laptop and is installed. My driver or the hardware was corrupted while installing a defective CD Game and running iTunes ( computer crashed, Combo drive hasn't worked since ) I'm looking for an alternative driver for this device, or the initial origianl driver.

Define "not working"

1: Drive will not read a cd or dvd disk?
2: Drive will not burn a cd or cd-rw disk?
3: When a blank cd or cd-rw disk is inserted in drive, recording software doesn't recognize it?

Is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Manager?

Not working: CD will not be ripped, or even recognized by software. The driver acts like it's out of batteries, it will hum for a second, then click and start over. However My Computer detects no problem, the device is working properly,

That sounds like a hardware problem. Software will not "repair" a defective drive.

Is it a new drive, used, bought from ebay, other? if new and in warranty, I'd return it quickly for exchange or refund.

I don't understand your term "The driver (or is it drive?) acts like it's out of batteries".... I wasn't aware that optical drives required batteries.

To better help you, I need questions 1 ~3 answered in post #2. And btw, optical drives do not require drivers. Support comes from the XP os and software.
