Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks or for burning dvd or cd-rw disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd. party recording & dvd decoding software is required.

If your problem is non-detection, please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21669&page=4

I think I understand your answer.

You're saying, that with Windows XP, I don't need drivers for the DVD burner, but I've always had to have drivers for this burner. And I am getting no hardware detection at all.

ok, is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Manager? If not that's not a problem caused by lack of drivers, it's a registry problem. Please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21669&page=4 for instructions on how to fix this problem.

All you need in addition to the native XP support is compatible 3rd. party burning software like Nero or Roxio (Easy Cd Burner) to burn dvd and cd-rw disks. And compatible dvd decoding software..... this will allow your drive to be able to play dvd movie disks.
Nothing else is required.
