Jerry K 09-27-2004, 01:32 PM one that's most often overlooked is WinXP's prefetch system. By keeping track of the applications you use right after booting, Windows can prefetch the data those applications will need, even before you launch them, which greatly decreases application launch time. Over time, you may use some applications less frequently or not at all, leaving WinXP to prefetch data for the wrong applications. You can empty the Prefetch folder, usually located at C:\WINDOWS\pPREFETCH, and remove all current prefetch instructions. The next time you boot, WinXP will rebuild its list of prefetch instructions, based on the applications you currently use. The more you surf the net, the more you get them! Lyle 12-19-2004, 01:33 PM You may have tons of Temporary files. These can safely be deleated using Windows XP/accessories/ systems tools/cleanup. Also defragmenting should help a lot. I'd try these things first. radz 12-20-2004, 12:33 AM Try This website www.blackviper.com it helped me a lot. blacksheep771 08-03-2005, 03:33 AM thers a little free program called dust buster..............safe to use and works good. Unregistered 08-03-2005, 05:05 AM I know this is probably an obvious answer that you have already tried, but perhaps it is time to run disk cleanup and disk defragmentor. A lot of people will tell you that disk fragmentation does not affect performance very much, but I certainly feel like there is a difference the next time I boot after defragging. If that doesn't help very much, then it has got to be some kind of adware/spyware/virus problem. Do like the other guys have said, and visit www.lavasoftusa.com and go to http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/ for a free spyware scan. Hope this helps! Snowwolf 07-07-2006, 04:28 AM Virtual Memory can be another good alternative to "increase application speed" per se. Just do the following: 1. Right click MY COMPUTER 2. Select PROPERTIES 3. Goto ADVANCE tab 4. under PERFORMANCE category, click the SETTING button 5. Goto ADVANCE tab 6. Click the CHANGE button 7. Change the Min and MAX size for your Virtual memory. A rule of thumb is if say your PHYSICAL RAM is at 512MB your Min should be 512, Max 768 or 1024. I did that on my notebook and it actually runs wee bit faster. Jack |
