Optical dvd/CD-RW/cd-rom drives do not require any driver when used in Windows XP. The XP os provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. It does not offer any support for playing dvd movie disks. For that task, compatible dvd decoding software is required (like WinDVD or PowerDVD).

Optical drives are not installed like other hardware... it's pretty much an automatic process with Windows, ie: there is no notification of "new hardware detected". The only way you will know when detection has occurred is by looking in My Computer or Device Manager and note that the drive is now listed. If it isn't, then you have some problem preventing detection.

Some causes of non-detection:
(1) Loose or defective IDE cables (common)
(2) Loose jumpers (common)
(3) A defective ROM drive (not often but it happens)
(4) Intermittent power supply or supply connector issues (rare but happens)
(5) Faulty motherboard connections or circuitry (very rare)
