Hello,
I am running win-xp pro on a dell 3500 inspiron laptop. Have downloaded the install and un-install programs from both ben-q and here and am unable to get them to work. I've installed both Cd creator 5.O Platinum and Nero Express. Cd-creator says it doesn't support the drive and Nero Express says it is missing the win ASPI file. I no longer have the Nero disk and it suggests I re-install Nero to get the file (however I have the feeling it still may not work were I to do this) it was suggested to someone else with the win-aspi problem that they fix the IDE port problem, but I don't know how to do this. Also when I install the driver Win-xp states an error 10 to me saying the driver cannot start. I've tried microsoft update, no luck. I've tried to be as thorough as possible with my description of the problem but may be missing some important points here. Any help would be hugely appreciated as I've wasted many hours on this driver and it may fly out the window pretty soon if I can't get it to work. I'm a student and am on a budget or else I would have given up long ago. Please Help, Jack

Your first mistake was installing 2 recording softwares. Never do that. Only install ONE recording software. If you wish to try another, then uninstalled the existing one first. When you say you have downloaded programs, to us that's an unknown. Always state what file and where you got it. USB 2.0 compliant drives do not require drivers in Windows XP. USB 1.0 drives do require drivers. I would guess from your drive description that your drive is usb 1.1 compliant but I don't know since you didn't say. USB drives require a properly installed AND working usb port. You also didn't include any information about the state or type of your current usb port. No information = little or no help.

O.K. I un-installed easy cd. un-installed the driver. Found a force ASPI file on adaptecs site and downloaded it which seems to have solved my error 11 (can't find aspi-file) problem with Nero. Downloaded the 1.10 usb file fom ben-q, (oh ya, my usb port is 1.10) checked all my cables, downloaded the un-install file fome ben-q ran it, intalled the 4406-eu (win 98,2000,xp)driver file from ben-q ran it and got error 10 once again, cannot start driver. I seem to have the same problem as another fellow who posted shortly after me. any help now?

In device manager it lists usb hub whose driver version is 5.1.2600.1106 designed by win xp publisher. It also lists intel (r) 82371ab/EBPCI to universal host controller (but I think that's for my internet connection right? because it says it's workings fine) in the first one though it lists two USB devices one working fine (I assume thats my printer as thats the same port I plug my printer into) and the other as an unknown device (my burner I assume) If this wasn't the info you were looking for could you please tell me where to look. Thanks for taking the time to read my first thread, I'm sorry the info was not accute (it still may not be but I'm trying)

State means condition... eg:what is the condition of the usb port as reported by device manager. Type means what type of usb connector does your pc have? eg: usb 1.1 or usb 2.0.
First let's establish that you have an older usb 1.1 drive...right? since it's a 4x4x6 (i don't believe they had usb 2.0 when it was made). The drive should work regardless of whether your usb port is 1.x or 2.0 as usb 2.0 is backward compatible.
Before you do anything else remove/uninstall all recording software. Then do a scan of your registry and clean/delete any references to any of the previously installed recording softwares. Before you worry about recording, you must first get the drive to READ A DATA OR MUSIC DISK. This support will come from the Windows XP os and/or usb drivers you mentioned (and I think I did previously in the DRIVER REQUEST forum a few days ago). While your doing this go to the Microsoft website link below and follow the instructions posted there for deleting the upper and lower filters.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q314060

Once this step is done, check in device manager for any UNKNOWN's or flagged devices and delete those as well. Now reboot and when finished booting check back in device manager. If drive was detected then it will be listed in Device Manager under CD-ROM. If it was detected and is listed there, insert a data disk and see if it will read it. If it doesn't then you must go back into device manager and check under USB to insure the usb ports are installed and working properly. If all is well in Device Manager (at this point) eg: drive is listed, usb ports are working, etc. then you can install ONE (and I mean only ONE) recording software. Before you do check with recording software maker to insure the version of software your using is compatible with the drive AND the os used. If after installing recording software you get a message that states drive cannot be detected, then you have not used a compatible version and upgrade or newer software is needed. As a last resort, then try using the drivers for your os, mentioned in the earlier posts. You have included most important info except the reports from device manager... please do so in future posts.

Note: You must have Nero version 5.5.5.1 (or higher) to work in Windows XP.

Ok. The condition of my USB port are fine, in device manager it says all is working properly. No upgraded drivers available etc. It is 1.1 just to make sure. My problem is no longer with the recording software, I removed it all and have the the second newest version of Nero here, prepared to install once I get the driver to start, Thats the poblem. I always get error 10 device cannot start. The driver requires an un-install first to create a data-base which I've done ( I read somewhere that this needs to be done, then re-boot, click on un-install file in a-drive again, then it creates a data-base, then re-boot again and install driver, It seemed to do both steps in one but I tried this anyway and it still came up error 10. My new question is whether the system BIOS settings might have anything to do with it, I read on the dell site about someone with an error 10 problem (for different driver and cd-rw) who was told to disable their BIOS USB DOS setting in order to correct this, I went into my f2 system BIOS settings at boot up to look for this but couldn't find it, at least by that name. My dell (inspiron 3500 laptop) book is uselessly inspecific. Do you know if I may be on the right track now or just beating a dead horse? Any more suggesstions? Thanks for your help with the last post, but I don't think I've got that far yet, I always get the Yellow ! in device manager and error ten cannot start.
Thanks Jack

I only have a few suggestions left.

1: Your usb port may not be providing adequate power to the drive. If you have or can borrow a usb POWERED HUB, try installing it, then plug the drive into the hub and retest.

2: Run the Update Driver wizard using the Update Driver button, but do not let Windows XP automatically detect devices. Instead, click Have Disk when prompted, then manually point the wizard to the appropriate driver.

3: Also, you might want to try cleaning the upper and lower filters from your registry. Microsoft has instructions for doing this at the link below:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q314060

Code 10 errors are usually associated with wrong or corrupt drivers.

I followed the instructions on removing the upper and lower filters. Found the proper registry. It broke into 3 sub folders. One 0000 One Digital Audio and one settings. I could not however within all three of these, nor the general registry find anything by the name of upper and lower filters. In the settings I clicked on the Default file within and it said cannot read, values not set. I clicked on everything else in the registry and none of them contain filters of any kind. Is this normal? I will try the Powered USB hub and pointing the update driver wizard directly to the source. Thanks for your help.
