I am trying to install an Acer 4406EU-002 external usb cdrw on a PC running windows 98se. I have no problems with this drive working on my laptop with the same OS. When trying to install on the PC it is shown as an unknown device under USB Controllers. In Properties it says (code 10) not working properly or drivers not installed. When I try to update the driver with a new one it tells me best driver already installed C:\windows\inf\usb.inf. When I delete that file I can install a new driver but then get "USB to ATAPI Adapter" in a New Hardware Found Box that does not respond. I have no paperwork or install cd's for this device and the Acer\BenQ website really sucks for finding information.

Does the usb port on problem pc match the one on the working laptop? eg: 1.0 compliant or 2.0 compliant? Is drive usb 1.x or 2.0 compliant? What is the type of usb port on the problem pc? Is it installed and working?

The usb port on both computers is usb 1.0 and the port on the pc works for all other usb drives plugged into it
