I have been repairing computers for about 5 years now and have acquired a big stack of cd-roms that will not read a cd. They seem to work otherwise. I waqs not taught how to repair them in school and can't seem to find adequate information on the internet. Can someone help with information on how to repair cd-roms? It sure would save me a lot of money. Thanks

since brand new CDRW's and DVD players are selling new for less than 30.00
and old stock older versions sell for 10.00/15.00 you are expecting savings of what?
time = money and these units are not worth spending time on.
if you simply want to learn how to repair electronic equipment then go to school to do so. current electronic equipment is not something having a casual "wanna fix it" method will suffice. to repair devices you must make the investment in the required test equipment and then buy the schematics (if available) determine the fault, and then order the part(s) all of which require much more than the cost of simply replacing the unit with a new working one.
most cdroms fail due to faults in the logic board and are not mechanical failures in most cases.

""""""""""most cdroms fail due to faults in the logic board and are not mechanical failures in most cases.""""""""""""???????????????????
If you ask someone who actually works on this stuff the opposite is closer to fact. At least 100/1 mechanical/electrical.
http://home.att.net/~t.f.cook/tc2.htm
"Mechanical problems such as dirt and lubrication are most common followed by the need for electrical (servo) adjustments"
"A dirty lens is probably the cause of the following problems, discs not being recognized, seek failure, audible noise, and erratic tracking, sticking, or skipping.
"Cleaning of the lens and the turning mirror, and an inspection of the mechanical parts should be the first things done for any of these problems""
Don't dispose of a most likely good CD ROM before you clean the lens.
