You cannot have an External drive with an IDE interface unless it's mounted inside an USB or SCSI Enclosure. In that case it would have a USB or SCSI interface.

Optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP. Please explain what the problem is and include some details from Device Manager and bios settings.
