for laptop...only recognizes it as a cd-rom

So what problem does that cause?

1: Will it not read a data or music disk?

2: Will it not read a dvd disk?

3: all of the above?

If #1, that's caused by non-detection.

If #2, that's caused by outdated or NO dvd decoding software.

If #3, we need some details from device manager and the version of dvd decoding software you have installed along with a physical description of how the drive is installed and configured as well as the pc bios setttings.
