haaghome 08-20-2007, 05:32 PM Jerry,
I'm having the same problem. XP (i run xp media center) is not installing the device correctly. The error is a 37 "windows can not initialize the device driver for this hardware"
I've tried running the firmware update, but it doesn't work because it can't detect the device.
I've removed the device from the laptop, shut down, restarted and reinstalled the device, still no joy.
Any ideas?
Jerry K 08-20-2007, 05:42 PM Please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21669&page=4
Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks or for burning dvd or cd-rw disks. For those tasks, compatible recording & dvd decoding software is required.
Please state what the problem is and include some details for further assistance.
If problem is non-detection by the os, read on....
Simple solution:
Situation
There is a yellow exclamation mark for CD/DVD drives in Device Manager. The device status in the properties of the driver might indicate an error code, for example 32, 37, or 39. Or the drive simply does not appear in My Computer or Device Manager.
Solution
To solve the issue, you have to edit the Windows Registry:
Click Start, then Run, type REGEDT32 and click OK.
Locate and then remove the following registry values:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}LowerFilters
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}UpperFilters
http://common.packardbell.com/itemnr/topic_02125/topic_02125.gif
Close Registry Editor.
Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.
Note: Some programs are unable to detect the CD/DVD drive after these steps. To solve this, simply re-install the program in question, eg: usually your recording software. Also, in few instances the order in which the programs are (re-)installed can make a difference.
And here's another method that will do this automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.

(automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip)
There is also a STICKY in the CD-DVD driver request forum that has instructions on how to do this fix along with a file from Microsoft that will perform the fix. Please read the STICKY for further instructions. This thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=30011
haaghome 08-20-2007, 07:24 PM That did it Jerry. Thanks so much for the help.

Please explain what problem you are experiencing.... with some details.
Smily2k3 12-14-2008, 03:36 PM Hi Jerry,
I myself am experiencing a similar problem. Computer i'm using is a dell inspiron 1300 and the cd-rw/dvd player is a phillips scb5265. Currently the computer is not recognizing the device. in the devise manager it shows with an exclamation mark. Tried removed and reinstalling it, same problem also tried removing the registry keys ...upper and lower filters.... same problem. The error code I get when installing the drive is (code 19) and I tried downloading the driver's and firware but when I try to install I get the message that "i do not have admin right, or the device is not recognized. please help.
Thanks
Jerry K 12-15-2008, 09:32 PM Try running the following .vbs fix from Doug Knox.... it removes the UpperFilters, LowerFilters registry values.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs
Download the file and save it to Desktop. Open an "admin" Command Prompt and run the .vbs file by typing the following at the console window:
wscript.exe "%userprofile%\desktop\xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs"
Smily2k3 12-17-2008, 05:25 AM Hey man,
I tried running the vbs script but it dd not work. Even after the restart as it suggested it was the same result where I couldn't see the cd drive. Any other suggestions? I really need to get it back without reformatting my entire computer. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Jerry K 12-17-2008, 05:08 PM Are you sure you're running it from an "Administration" command prompt? Or simply sign in as "Administrator".
In Windows XP, to get Open Command Prompt Here on folder’s right click contextual menu, download and install "Open Command Window Here PowerToy" CmdHerePowertoySetup.exe (download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/CmdHerePowertoySetup.exe)
Open Command Prompt Here PowerToy adds an “Open Command Window Here” context menu option on file system folders in Windows XP, giving users a quick way to open a command window (cmd.exe) pointing directly at the selected folder. Unlike Windows Vista, the “Open Command Window Here” option will permanently display on right click menu in XP.
Example:

Vista users don't have to add this feature as it's already built in but hidden from normal viewing.
Smily2k3 12-27-2008, 02:16 PM Sorry Jerry,
But it did not work. I'm the only user on this computer so for sure i'm logged in as the administrator. I'm doing everything as you said but after a restart as the script suggest I still do not have the cd drive listed in my computer. Could their be something wrong in my registry other than the high or low filters?
BTW your "Open Command Window Here PowerToy" link doesn't work in the previous post (address not valid)
Jerry K 12-28-2008, 01:47 PM Link was ok, I just forgot to insert a " at the end. I have made corrections and the link now works.
Deleting the upper and lower filters will only help if the drive isn't listed in My Computer. If it's missing, then you have some hardware problem or bios setup problem or a defective drive.
You must sign in as "administrator" (at least that's what Windows is telling you).
Has this drive ever worked? Was working but suddenly quite? Did you make any hardware or software changes when the problem occurred?
Try changing the bios settings to where the optical drive is the first boot device. Then insert a bootable disk, power on, and see if it will boot the machine. If it does, you know the drive is ok, but if it doesn't, then you have a problem with the drive.
Smily2k3 01-04-2009, 03:49 AM Hey Jerry,
Ok here is the lastest news. I went in the bios settings and placed the CD-ROM as the first boot device. I booted the computer with the windows XP CD and it loaded the XP setup. What I noticed is that halfway through the setup it gives me the message that setup cannot continue because file cdrom.sys is corrupt.
Now previously the CD-ROM drive worked fine then all of a sudden it dissapeared from the my computer device list. Nothing was changed, and at the time no new applications were installed.
So i'm guessing that this means that the drive is somewhat working but stopped due to a corrupt file. Now my question is how can I reinstall windows without having access to my drive? Any ideas? Anything would be appreciated, thanks again.
Jerry K 01-04-2009, 04:08 AM Assuming the file is only corrupt on the hard drive and the one on the install cd is ok, just let it boot and start installation. If will replace the corrupt file(s) from the install disk.
Or you can just replace that file only by using the run command and type "msconfig" and click ok, then click on EXPAND FILE. You must have the install disk in the drive and then tell it where you want the new file to be written.
It belongs in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
I believe the source file is driver.cab on the install disk. This cab file also exists on the hard drive so if you cannot get it to read from the cd, tell it to look in C:\WINDOWS\driver cache\i386 folder on the hard drive.... when doing the File expand program. I'd try this procedure first, then if it doesn't work, reinstall the os. You won't loose data files, ie: pictures, songs, movies, etc. by just doing a re-install if you do it correctly. Don't try to do a repair, just do a normal install and choose "replace corrupt OS files only". If you do this, you will need to do Windows Updates afterwards as those are all lost during re-install.
You may have to end up reinstalling because if you have one file that's corrupt, there could be many others as well.
martialarts2007 01-09-2009, 03:46 AM Jerry,
Thank you for the advice on the lower and upper filters for the cdrw/dvd with phillips. Worked well. Much appreciated.
SuSpanS 01-19-2009, 10:36 PM Hi all,
I hope this is the right place for my post.
I have a Dell Latitude D620 with a PHILIPS CDRW/DVD SCB5265 .
My problem is : I can play cd and dvd data discs but I cannot burn them.
I'm using nero and when I insert a blank CD the windows dosen't recognise it , it's starts a little bit to work and after that it stops and the windows dosen't recognize the blank cd , it's like nothing was inserted.
Note: I'm using windows xp professional sp3 and in device manager all seems to be ok.
Does anyone faced the same problem ?
Thank you.

Some history... has the Nero ever worked in XP? What version?
It sounds like you need a newer version of Nero installed or an update for your current version. Can't help much until you provide some additional info.

Hi ,
I have nero 7.1 i'll try another version later and i'll post a result.
Thank you.
Jerry K 01-23-2009, 02:49 AM Version 7.1 should work just fine in Windows XP but it's possible it needs to be a newer version to be compatible with this particular drive model.
I'm running version 6.9 Nero and it works just fine with my TDK burner.
Sweettee 11-20-2009, 08:57 PM Jerry I have the same drive(Philips cdrw/dvd scb5265) and mine is showing up but when I put a disk in, it just doesn't show there's a disk in the drive, it does not matter what kind. It clicks and it sounds like it's starting and stopping. I have XP professional and I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and I just had to reinstall xp so I've started fresh but now my disk drive is not really working. If I keep opening and shutting it sometimes it will pick up the disk. Do I need a driver or a new disk drive. I kinda know how to fix my computer but when ppl start talking about going in and changing what's in a file it get's kinda hairy. I hope you can help me.
Thank You,
Tee

If the drive is visible in My Computer and Device Manager.... and it's not flagged as having a problem in Device Manager, then it's most likely a defective drive.
If it's missing from either place, let me know.
