:disturbed After having problems with my PC not recognising my new Apple Ipod and Memory Sticks when they were plugged into any USB ports on either the PC or monitor I spoke to a so-called-expert who told me to delete all of my USB devices listed in device manager and then re-scan. This I did but to my dismay when I re-scanned I was asked for the software for each of the devices. But I have no idea where this may be as the file names do not tell me what the device is i.e I have 2 files missing called 'Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller' which I don't know what this relates to. I have tried using the driverguide toolkit but it was unable to find any of the missing drivers.
Now when I go into 'my computer' none of the USB ports that were listed before under 'Devices with Removable' storage appear other than the D drive.

My operating system is Windows XP Media 2002
Motherboard is: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe PCI-Express Manboard ATX
and the processer is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4200+ with HT Tech if that is of any help?

Please can anyone suggest what I can do to resolve this issue? Many thanks.

Hopefully, you unplugged all usb devices before you rescanned. USB drivers are included with the operating system... you don't need any installation disk to install them and they are installed without user intervention.

By default, during a normal Windows XP installation, there is a driver called DRIVER.CAB written to the following folder: C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386

It's nearly 75 mb in size. Anytime Windows needs drivers during detection of any hardware, that's the first place it checks for to extract a driver. All usb drivers are contained within that CAB file. So if your usb ports were not reinstalled automatically after rebooting or rescanning, then that file is missing or corrupt. No worry, it still on the installation disk. Just insert it into your optical drive and redirect the installation program to look there instead of the hard drive.

Or you can copy the file from the installation disk back to the hard drive and you won't have this problem.
