Driver Needed
No you do not.....
company sights all down
So what would they have that interests you?
Windows XP includes native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a CD-R disk. No support for burning CD-RW or DVD disks or for playing dvd disks. For those tasks, compatible recording and dvd decoding software is required.
eg: Easy CD/DVD Creator, Nero and WinDVD or PowerDVD.
USB 1.1 support is included with Windows XP.
USB 2.0 support comes from installing SP1 or SP2.

You failed to read (or understand) my first post. Please read it again.
USB drives DO NOT require any driver when used on a Windows XP machine.

I wish that was true about my unit, but my backpack is not seen by my computer. an artickle in presentation digitalmidianet.com by Charlie White had the same problem when the backpack was tested by him. He had to go to microsolutions to fix the problem. I appreciate your help and have read your reply, it seems as thought i will have to find another way to get it to work or dunp it. thanks Ray

The only reason why it would not be detected automatically within 4-5 seconds after it's plugged into a USB port would be "the usb port has a problem". In all your posts you have not stated if you checked in Device Manager to see if the USB port(s) were working. This would be a good time to do so.

Yes, I have posted numerous articles on how to do the "delete upper & lower filters" fix. I also have posted a link to download a file that will do it automatically. Give it a try and let us know how it worked. If it works, you will be the first known case of being affected using USB drive.
Just read a few of the comments I've posted for this fix in the 20 or so posts below yours.

Actually Jerry, the original poster IS correct in this case.
For the Microsolutions Backpack DVD burners you DO need special software from the company that is no longer in business to use their devices. Windows won't recognize the devices at all unless you download the backpack finder utility and drivers that come bundled with it.
Microsolutions had their website up for two years after they went out of business as a convenience for their customers, but they took it down recently.
I went onto the wayback machine (internet archives) and downloaded their latest driver. It worked fine for me.
I UPLOADED THE DRIVER YOU NEED. It's called pnp407d.exe

One thing to be aware of with the Microsolutions backpacks is that it is the backpack or enclosure as they are sometimes called that needs the driver. The actual drive will probably work in XP or at least a driver would be available with Yamaha. I beleive with XP that would not be necessary if you installed it as an internal. If that is not an option you may consider purchasing a 5.25 enclosure and installing the drive in that. It should work with one from a company that is still in business and drivers available. A new one is always best as you get drivers disks with them if they are neccessary. They are available on Ebay on a regular basis.
I bought one of these used a number of years ago as my first cdr. I ultimately bought a new computer and it came with one so it sat in my basement for some time. I then installed a lite-on dvdr in it. It still needed the microsolutions driver, but, it is still working today. It sounds like you are unable to get the correct driver for your particular model.
