Firewire / 1394 drives normally are external and connect to a compatible controller. You cannot have an internal drive with this configuration unless your controller has a special internal connector coming inside the box from the external drive. (have never seen any). All UJ-810 model drives are for laptop models and have ATAPI/IDE interfaces.

Either type do not require a driver when used in Windows XP operating system.

Please explain (or state what the problem is). Most likely your problem has already been discussed in this forum.

Well, my computer is a laptop... And the problem is that it wont read any CDs/DVDs, when I go to the CD-Drive in my computers, It's empty, as if there were no cd inside.... I've searched the forum but didn't find anyone with an answe except for one saying I need to upgrade firmwire and one saying to follow this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;320553 ... -I did, but neither method 1 or two was correct for me.

So I must assume (by your statement) that the drive IS listed in My Computer but when you insert a disk containing data, it appears there is nothing on the disk? Is this correct? Does the drive also appear in Device Manager under DVD, CD-ROM section? If so is it reported as working when you check the device properties? Also, check in this same section and tell me what firmware version is reported by Windows.

You are inserting a disk into the drive containing data, music, or some other form of files, eg: mp*, vid, ect.? What kind of disk? What do you do after you insert the disk? Click something, open some application, or nothing? Does anything happen automatically if you do nothing?

*Normally, when you insert a music disk, the default music player opens and starts playing the first song.....

*If you insert a data disk, after a few seconds, a Window will open in the center of your screen asking you what you would like to do with the disk.
Do you get this screen when inserting a data disk?

*If you insert a movie disk, it will automatically open the dvd decoding software application and start playing the movie (providing you have properly installed compatible dvd decoding software, eg: WinDVD or PowerDVD)

*These statements are true assuming you have not disabled or changed default Windows settings

Yes that statement is true... The device is listed in device manager under DVD-/CD ROM Devices, and it is active and it says that it is working ... I dont do anything after inserting the CD/DVD, and nothing shows up either. Is there anything wrong within the computer or is it the DVD ROM?

The firmwire version is 5.1.2535.0 and the date is 2001-07-01...

~ I dont do anything after inserting the CD/DVD
I'm gonna only ask you one more time.... please be specific in answering my earlier question.... what kind of disk are you inserting and what type of files does it contan? If more than one kind, then list all the types of disks and what happens when you insert each disk and do nothing but wait at least 15 seconds.

Aslo, what dvd decoding software/version do you have installed?

The firmwire version is 5.1.2535.0 and the date is 2001-07-01...
I would advise to contact your laptop maker, technical support, to inquire about ANY available firmware updates for hardware installed in or attached to your pc by the laptop maker. Be very carefull and use only firmware specified as certified for use in your specific laptop. Using non-laptop manufacturer specific drivers can render your drive or laptop useless.

If you require additional help, please state the laptop and model # (info that should have been in your original request). We can only help once you provide adequate information about your hardware, pc system, & software/version.

Sorry missed that question... I inserted a DVD+R and CD-R. One of the cd's was a Windows XP CD. The DVD-ROM doesn't recognize it at start, so it can't boot with it. The other CD's contained .exe files and .mpg and .avi files. That's it. I waited for about five minutes, before doing anything else after the input of the CD/DVD.

The laptop is a EasyNote E model, a packard bell.
Processor: AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2400+ (1,8GHz)
Cache: 256 Kb
Motherboard Chipset: VIA Apollo KN266
Bus Speed: 266MHz
USB 2.0 support
Memory: 512MB DDR
Hard Drive: 40GB
CD/DVD type: DVD/DVDRW Combo
Graphic card: 32MB Shared S3 ProSavage8 (Integrated on VAI Chipset)
Chipset: Realtek AC-97 Codec ALC201

blanks or prerecorded disks on the same machine? Blanks have nothing on them to read.....

Do you have pc bios set to boot from cd/dvd drive first?

again, what dvd decoding software/version do you have installed? It's only required to play dvd disks and .mpg and .avi files.

Can you see the files on a DATA disk in Windows Explorer, Yes or No? If you can see them, that means the machine is reading them... no special software is required to see or launch an EXE file. The Operating System provides that suppport.

They had files, as I told you. .exe, .avi and .mpeg files...
Yes, it boots with the cd.
Don't know what you mean really with dvd decoding software/version,
But I do use PowerDVD, if that's what you mean?
No, no files can be seen.
Well, it was bought in europe...

Have you tried starting from scratch and re-install the operating sytem and application software from a recovery disk? Sometimes that's the easiest method of solving problems that you are unable to fix manually. Did your laptop come with this recovery software?

In conclusion, all I can say is this. If software and settings are correct and hardware Device Manager states the device is working ok, I cannot think there is much else wrong that will make it work other than a reinstall of necessary files providing there isn't a technical problem with the actual drive like defective. I don't believe there is a software available that will make a non-working drive work if it's defective. There are rare circumstances where a firmware update might help with overall problems. Packard-Bell support sites or PB Tech Support can only tell you if such firmware is available. Because your drive firmware is around 5 years old, I strongly suggest you visit the Packard-Bell website nearest your country of residence or try buying a newer drive.

Well, the main idea was to try getting the DVD rom working so that I could re install everything, because the computer has so many problems. The laptop doesn't have a floppy disk and the DVD rom isn't working either, so it's going to be real hard to re-install it. But would and external dvd-rom work maybe?

one other question I asked that you never answered. Do you have the dvd drive set as the 1st boot device (in pc bios setup)?

To answer your question about "will an external dvd drive work"?. Not sure... I've only used one in Windows XP os.... never tried to boot with it. I know that external usb drives are not supported in DOS mode but it might if the system bios supported it....
I don't have access to mine right now so cannot confirm if it will boot up with the XP installation disk or not... perhaps someone who has one can confirm this.
