Would have been nice if you had stated what operating system this problem is encountered in. Assuming it's Windows 2k or xp.....
start the computer in safe mode (F8 during bootup) and use the default Administrator Account then go to Control Panel -> user accounts, then save your documents and delete your account that u r locked out of then recreate it and re insert your documents and reset
or
press ctrl+alt+del 2 times to log into the administrator account then go to Control Panel then to useraccounts and delete your password
or
known issue, it was from an Automatic Update, don't know the exact number of this particular windows update but, the only way to solve your issue is to reboot, then hit F8, when you get the menus, select LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIG, and this should solve your problem.
or
Use this procedure to change the password
Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Under or pick an account to change, click your account.
Click Change my password.
Type your current password in Type your current password.
Type your new password in Type a new password and Type the new password again to confirm.
You can type a word or phrase to use as a memory aid for the new password in type a word or phrase to use as a password hint.
Click Change Password.
Notes
To open User Accounts, click Start, double-click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts.
Password security depends on creating strong passwords and protecting them.
Question: I'm a little confused. If I never set the password, and don't know what XP thinks is the current password, how do I enter that in order to change it?
Answer: Don't enter a password, you should be able to just click over it or simply press Enter.

This is the first dialogue that I have seen that remotely addresses my problem of having tried to set up an XP Pro Administrator (Laptop) password only to have the OS reject the PW AND hint in every possible permutation.
I will try this some day on a non-critical machine after the vendor to whom I returned my laptop returns it, hopfully fixed.
Thanks for ALL input.
