Read post #4 in this thread:

It will contain info on how to fix your non-detection problem.

Any problems, just ask.

I'm assuming that it doesnt matter the brand of the device when doing this? The one in the link isnt the same, just asking.

Correct.... problem is unique to Windows XP... not the drive brand or model.

Ok thank you. And after reading your directions, this is just 1 line you have to delete, correct? I was reading like you'll have to go in different keys to find the same line to delete.

some folks who do this state they only find one...either upper or lower. Delete both or if only one is present, delete the one.

This is Microsofts exact method of performing this procedure if you wish to read it: (scroll down to: Method #1: Remove the registry entry)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;320553

and some drive problems can be fixed using this method:

- Press on "START"
- Then on "CONTROL PANEL"
- Then click on "Administrative Tools"
- Then on "Computer Management"
- Click on the [+] of "STORAGE"
- Then on the [+] of "REMOVABLE STORAGE"
- Then on the [+] of "LIBRAIRIES"
Your CD Drive should be listed, click on it to enable it.
- Then try your CD tray to see if it opens and close normally.
- It should now also appear on the "My Computer"

and if you're afraid to do this procedure manually, here's a file that will do it for you....

If you have a problem of non-detection, eg: drive is not visable in My Computer or Device Manager, then you probably need the "delete upper and lower filters in the registry fix". Here's a file you can download. Unzip it and run the file.... after performing this, reboot and Windows will automatically detect and install your drive. CdGone.zip (www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip)

After unzipping this file to a temp folder, read the TEXT file for further instructions.

This info was already posted here: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=22050 (took me a few minutes to find it)

Jerry... been reading "over your shoulder" and your suggestion in this thread solved the same problem for me (was a Toshiba Satellite with removable DVD/CDRW drive). I used your suggestion (CdGone.zip) & it worked flawlessly.

Thank you very much!!!

Here's a utility by Microsoft that does that same thing: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=aw;en-us;314060&eula=1

It also takes you to the page where instructions are posted... there's a half-dozen ways to do it but this is the easiest (as well as the cdgone file).

Thanks, I'm giving it a shot, though I think the problem might just be the matShity drive. It has never been very happy. It now won't recognise any premium blank cd I try, but does the dvd's. Thanks- Peter.

Those UJ-xxx models are very notorious for going bad. I've seen brand new ones fail within one hour of being put to use. Replace it with a different brand and you might have better luck.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you saying the drive is not listed.... where? Perhaps in My Computer and/or Device Manager?

If this is correct then you may need to do the "delete upper and lower filters fix". The procedure is written in many threads in this forum.

I downloaded the CDGONE file and it worked in restoring my CD and DVD drives to the My Computer window....however when I insert a disk, it is still not recognized, I.E. no autoplay and when i double click the drive letter, it says "Please insert a disk".

Any ideas on what I might try next?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

What kind of disk are you inserting that can't be read? eg: dvd blank disk or recorded dvd disk, cd disk, other? Can that disk be read on another machine?

If the drive is not flagged as having a problem (in device manager), then you most likely have a bad drive.

I had to post that I was having the same problem of the system all of a sudden not recognizing my CD/DVD drive and gettin that yellow "!" in the device manager for it as well.

Many thanks to this website and the posting of the solution. It worked great. I used the CDGONE file link to take care of the problem automatically instead of manually going into the registery myself.

My laptop (for anyone else interested) is a Panasonic Toughbook CF-W5M model operating on Windows XP Home.

Again, thank you SO MUCH!:hail:  :gabby:
