This toshiba 1625 CDT laptop now has XP from the old 98 and the modem quit. It now says no dialtone. I have used the drivers from the toshiba support and here and they must be wrong now that there is XP. The windows driver XP install do the same. The modem work fine for a while. I am not sure hoe to open the lap top to install or check the chipset number on the modem. Help help help.

There is no need to open the machine. It doesn't really matter what modem is inside, Conexant didn't build it. Conexant only made the chipset. Toshiba takes the chipset and incorporates propriatary firmware on it so that makes it where generic drivers won't work on it, eg: you must use drivers ONLY from Toshiba.

remove all old drivers, including any INF files that might have been copied to the C:\Windows\INF folder relating to Toshiba. Then reinstall the drivers.
