Maybe this is a simple request and I just can't figure it , but here goes.
A buddy of mine has a generic sound card, one of those Tiwan no name specials with surround sound.
The box says that it is XP compatible, XP names the card and loads a driver.
The problem is it doesn't work correctly.
He has gone to the manufactors website and downloaded an updated driver.
Again, it still doesn't work right.
He has left emails there and no one responds.
He got frustrated and started playing with other card drvers, low n' behold he found one that works. It seems to activate all the functions of the card.
The problem comes during the next XP boot. The system says that it has found new hardware and wants to reload the lame non-functional driver.
He can again force it to use the odd driver, but it is a pain to do each time.
So we are back to my original question.
How do you force XP to use the wrong driver?
(Without having to redo it on each boot.)
I would like to know, in a general way, how to do this.
I think that I have covered most everything.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.:disturbed

Did you mean instead? "How do you force XP to NOT use the wrong driver?"

why would you want to "force XP to use the wrong driver?"

Thanks for responding Jerry.
What I'm really after is a way to force XP to use a driver that I specify.
(With out it trying to change it each time it boots.)
The driver that XP loads and the updated one from the vendor doesn't work correctly. (The surround sound will not function)
(Keep in mind that I don't have physical access to the system at this exact moment.)
I suspect that the vendor copied (stole) another company’s system.
(Hardware and/or software) They perhaps made some minor changes and didn't them right.
Anyway, now XP loads what it thinks is correct, which actually disables some functions. (I suspect it might really be loading the standard mode driver.)
I believe it is related to the signature verification program.
My buddy has found another driver (not the OEM one) that works.
So I would like to know how to make it keep using the incorrect driver all the time and not try to reload a new driver each time it boots.
I hope I am a little clearer this time.
Thanks again for any help.
