Stop worrying about what Windows XP tells you and proceed thru the installation.

Instructions for installing Acer brand parallel port scanners in Windows XP:

For this driver to work in XP you must install the MiraScan software then install the scanner manually.

Step 1. Download MiraScan v3.424 from the web : Mirascan_v3424p.exe (ftp://12.145.38.159/scanner/drivers/parallel/mirascanv3424p.zip)

Step 2. Unzip and install the Mira Scan driver that you just downloaded. After installation , system will suggest you to add a scanner

Step 3. Then, add an imaging device

Step 4. Then the Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard comes up. Click Next at the bottom.

Step 5. Then on Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard screen it will ask you which scanner or camera do you want to install? You want to go where it says Manufacturer and then click on EPPSCANNER and where it says Model it should say color flatbedscanner. Make sure it is highlighted, also. Click on Next at the bottom.

Note: For additional screen shots of this procedure and installation procedures, please read the pdf file posted here: scpinwxp-eng.pdf (ftp://12.145.38.159/scanner/manuals/scpinwxp-eng.pdf)
The Screenshots show to be for Mirascan v3.423 but procedure is same for v3.424
Note: Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view or print this file.

Additional note: This information has been posted over and over and over....

You folks all must have not read the entire thread.... especially post #2. The procedure listed there is the only way you will get this scanner to work in Windows XP.

Have you read the instructions in post #2 and followed them all the way through?

Acer/Benq stated when they first introduced this scanner driver that it may not work on all computers. They have no plans to ever release a full fledged driver for this scanner model that will work on all machines.

Windows XP does not like Parallel Port scanners. It's a hardware limitation. Windows XP was designed by Microsoft for new or yesterdays scanner models and cannot provide a sure-fire method to make this model work in Win XP.

I'd suggest to buy a newer USB scanner that has Win XP support.

I'm not that familiar with the driver listed in post #2 and it's contents, but I believe the OCR (scanning software) is included with the driver (or vice-versa). If this is true, then separate OCR software is not needed to make the scanner perform it's duties.

One thing.... you might want to check is in the pc BIOS setup to insure the parallel port is set to ECP.
