I am trying to reinstall BT Broadband. When I try and do this with the original installation CD, I get the following error message:
Can't get registry value: key = Software\GlobespanVirata\Adsl value = driver Type".
I have downloaded the newest drivers from BT Broadband official web site and get the same message when I try and reinstall.
The computer runs Windows XP Home and is bug and virus free.
I have checked in the device manager and there is nothing there left from the uninstall of BT Broadband.
Help needed please.
Thank you.

This applies to the BT Voyager 105 ADSL modem.
I had the same error when trying to install this modem that a lot of people have had, i.e.:
"Can't get registry value: Key=software\GlobespanVirata\Adsl value=driverType"
The solution I discovered for this was to go to the following location in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE
Right click on the SOFTWARE folder and create a new key and call it "GlobespanVirata". Right click on this new key and create another key inside it called "adsl". You should now have:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->GlobespanVirata->Adsl
Right click on "adsl" and create a new string value called "annexType". Repeat this step, creating values with the names "driverDir", "driverType", "ispSection", "layer3Protocol", "modulation", "vci" and "vpi".
Now try to install the modem drivers. If you get an error that says another value cannot be read from the registry, note the name of it and create it as you did above in the same place. Once you no longer see these error messages you should see a regular installer window. I got this, but then it failed. However - simply run it again and it should install fine as it did for me. If not, reboot, and try again
hope this is of use
Hi
Thanks for this information. I have actually sorted out the Globespan Virata message error. However, I wonder if you could help me with a related query.
Now that I have reinstalled the BT Broadband, the Broadband keeps dropping. There is no pattern to this - it just drops when it feels like it. I get the following error message when it drops:
Generic Host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and need to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The machine then has to be restarted.
BT have suggested that a configuration issue in Windows XP is causing this. I do not know if you could shed any light on this matter as it's causing all sorts of frustrations.
Thank you.

try
Disconnecting the printer and the scanner from the computer.
Restart the computer
if the error has gone
update drivers for printer / scanner
It is a problem with the BT Broadband and it keeps dropping when that error message comes up. Why is it then that I should disconnect the printer and scanner?
I can try this but please can you explain why this item would affect the BT Broadband?
Thank you.

that was the most popular from the internet when googled
"Generic Host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and need to close"
the info came from microsoft site.
i can post some more links later if this does not work,
Hello Peter, I'm using AOL (yeah I know) with a Voyager 105 and I have the same error. I added to the reg as you said and now when I run the setup.exe I get nothing, no errors and no setup window. help.
Ok I've rebooted again and I've got the same error coming up.
Do a Windows update and ensure that Windows Service Pack 2 is installed.
This solved my problem.
It's always had SP2 and I have auto update switched on and do a manual update once a month or so.

I want to express my deep and sincere thanks to Peter. The latest Microsoft security automatic update wiped out most of my computer. Required a complete system restore and took my BT Voyager 105 modem offline. I too experienced the "can't get registry value key = Software\GlobespanVirate\Adsl value = driverType" error when I tried to reinstall the modem
I called BT Technical help. The representative could only read off a prepared script "Is the power light on? Is the DSL light on? Is the modem plugged in?"
and did not know what a registry key was or could even comprehend a problem that lay outside the script.
I tried for weeks to restore the modem. I finally found your instructions after two weeks of searching and they worked!!!
I was able to reconnect to a different BT Technician who understood about the registry problem and was able to walk me through a successful reinstallation. I told him about your instructions and requested that BT look into them as a troubleshooting technique. He did say that a number of BT customers have experienced this problems after the July 7 2008 automated update - it seems to be associated with Zonealarm.
My deepest gratitude....
