Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from 95 up.

When the drive is properly connected/configured, the os should recognize the drive during bootup
and a listing should appear in Device Manager under CD-ROM showing the drive. If the os fails to
detect the drive, here are the most common reasons:

1: Improperly connected ide ribbon cable or defective cable/connectors.
2: Master/Slave jumper not set correctly.
3: Problem with the ide port to which the drive is connected or wrong ide drivers installed.
4: IDE port is disabled in bios.
5: Defective drive.

Burning software only provides burning support... it does not provide any support for reading a data or music disk. Depending of the type of recording software, it may contain support for reading dvd disks.
