Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from 95 up. Windows XP provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for burning cd-rw or for playing dvd disks. For those 2 tasks, compatible recording and dvd decoding software is required.

My drive doesn't work is the most useless statement on this board. If I told you my car doesn't work, could you tell me how to fix it?

Doesn't work could mean any of the following:
1: It doesn't read any kind of disks.
2: It doesn't burn cd-r or cd-rw disks.
3: It doesn't play dvd disks.
4: It's not installed or configured correctly.
5: The ide port it's connected to is not enabled in pc bios setup.
6: The cables are not connected properly.

Next time you need help, please be more specific with your problem and include some details from device manager.

Yeah, my DVD/CDRW can't read any kind of disk, like software CDs, music CDs.
The computer system check shows that the DVD rom is working properly, although I don't know if that is true or not.
When i put in the CD, I could hear the machine ran for a few seconds then stopped.

Is the drive listed in My Computer and in Device Manager?
