What's the difference between "recognizes" and "reads"?

Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from 95 up.

Support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk is native (included) to the os.

The only kind of disks that can be formatted are cd-rw and since your drive is a reader only, you don't have the hardware required to format a disk.

Is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Manager? Do you have it installed/configured properly? Do you have the ide port enabled in bios setup?
