DRIVER NEEDED: Matsushita (Matshita Panasonic) ujdcd8730 CD-Rom.

I have an old Thinkpad 310ED operating on Windows 95. The CDRom is not functioning. When a disk is inserted, you can hear the drive turning the disk attemtping to read it, but nothing happens. When I double-click the CD-Rom icon in MyComputer, I get the following error message:

"D:\is not accessible. The device is not ready."

In Device Manager, the CD-Rom is shown without any error signs (question mark, exclamation point, etc.). After double clicking the CD-Rom icon, it shows Matshita UJDCD8730 (also without any error signs). When I double click the Matshita icon, its' Properties window pops up, stating the device status as working properly. However, under the driver tab, it states that no driver files are required or have been loaded for the device.

My intent is to attempt to re-install the CD-Rom but I need the driver to do so.

Any help would be appreciated.

However, under the driver tab, it states that no driver files are required or have been loaded for the device.

That message is normal and does not indicate any problem.

"no driver files are required" .. this is true in any Windows os from 95 up.

No drivers are needed when using this drive in Windows 95a or higher. The os provides native support for your drive.

When properly connected/configured, the os should recognize the drive during bootup and a listing should appear in Device Manager under CD-ROM showing the drive. If the os fails to detect the drive, here are the most common reasons:

1: Improperly connected ide ribbon cable or defective cable/connectors.
2: Master/Slave jumper not set correctly.
3: Problem with the ide port to which the drive is connected or...
4: Wrong ide drivers installed.
5: IDE port is disabled in bios.
6: Improperly flashed firmware
7: Defective drive.

Note: Also, the early version of Win 95 (Win95a)(osr1) has problems detecting certain drives.
This can be corrected by upgrading to osr2 (Win95B or higher) (later version of Windows 95).
The newer version contains improved ide chipset drivers that solve the non-detection problem.
Your only other option is to find/install newer ide chipset drivers.
This may prove to be more difficult to do than simply updating your Windows os.
