The manufacturers of the notebook, a Packard Bell EAsynote M5284, replaced the existing hard drive and cd/dvd drive(was sd-r6012)with this drive under warranty. The drive will not recognise DVDs of any kind, and will therefore not write to them. It will read CDs, but not write to them. Tried reformatting and reinstalling Windows XP home to correct this and other problems, but problem persists, don't have driver as original installation disks were for old drive. Seems very common problem with this unit.

No drivers are required when using this drive in Windows XP (other than what the os provides and by compatible recording and dvd decoding software). Windows XP includes native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. It contains no support for burning cd-rw or for playing dvd disks. For those 2 tasks, compatible recording and dvd decoding software is required.

Thanks for your reply. Nero 6 is installed, and scouring tech help sites I've established that this is a widespread problem with this unit which some people have overcome by installing the relevant Toshiba driver. You can only access this driver from the Toshiba site if you have bought a Toshiba notebook and can supply the relevant info about it, hence my request to you for the driver.

Again.... optical drives never require a driver to operate in any Windows os.
Read the information provided in the links in my earlier post and you will find the fix for non-detection.

Thanks again for your reply. I have already tried all the 'fixes' in the links, with no success, hence my request. Only option is to buy a new drive, I guess!

Have you checked the master/slave jumper to insure it's in the correct position?
Have you deleted the upper and lower filters in the registry?
Still no detection?

Mr Moderator
You don't seem to get it.
This person along with myself is having a problem; whereas his, nor, does my computer's operating system recognizes his drive as it actually is.
Therefore we can not perform the tasks that the device is designed for.
Sending us to sites that we have already scoured with no helpful results is pointless.
We need a driver that will solve the problem.
Regards and good luck to you buddy in finding a driver but I don't think this site can help us anymore.

I get it real well my friend. It's you that seems to have a problem. I say read and you don't... or you don't understand what you read. I repeat it again and you still don't get it... rambling something about needing a driver. Whenever you locate this mysterious driver I would like to see it.

Hi Jerry, I had the same problem. Only my drive dissapeared after a year or so. I performed the steps outlined in the first link you provided. This worked. I now have my drive back.
Thanks for your help.
