I have an american megatrends motherboard in a tower with a pentium 2 processor 300mhz. I have in my possession a pentium 3 processor from an american megatrends tower motherboard 450mhz. I have been told I need to set the cpu clock?, if I want to switch these processors. Both are socket type processors and look almost identical. Pull one out and push the other one in. How do I set the cpu clock? Am I heading in the right direction?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Many mother boards do the settings in bios setup, many older boards you must set the jumpers manually. You need to know what mobo you have and if you dont have a manual, download one from the manufacturer. Depending on the buss speed, for instance a 233 intel MMX at a fsb of 66, the jumper setting would be 3.5 X 66=231 (close enough) This setting is usually the default setting on older boards and come jumpered that way!

Thanks for the info. I am aware I must be sure of the procedure I am attempting I have the original motherboard that came with the 450 mhz processor and I am going to attempt to download the manual for the motherboard with the 300mhz processor. I am truly appreciative of your input and what a great site this is. Have a great day.

look at the chipset and evaluate it's capabilities;
like intel EX, LX, ZX only run at 66.6MHz
checking this first can save you a lot of dissapointment and futile anticipation........
