Greetings everyone,
I'm currently using a linotype saphir ultra for my scanning. Right now i can only scan in OS9. i've contacted my scsi card's manufacturer and they're pointing fingers at Apple and/or the scanning software (which is Silverfast AI 6 - completely compatible with OS X). They say that the card - adaptec - is fully compatible with OS X and that the new operating system contains all the drivers needed to run.
Here's what I've found so far - my G4 tower "sees" the scsi card in the apple system profiler. However, it does not see the scanner. When i boot into OS 9 both devices are "seen" in the profiler. My scanner ID is not conflicting with any other scsi devices.
Is there a updated driver for the scanner itself available? Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
John

i actually bought a saphir ultra recently, i have an adaptec 2906 pci card on my sawtooth G4. i'm actually trying to use linocolor as my software (no longer available). i have the same problem where OS X doesnt recognize the scanner but does see the card... OS 9 does see the scanner.
i havent had a chance to do much research, in fact yourt post was the first related thing i found, i'll let you know if i make any progress and please post if you find out anything.

I have the same problem. They suggested trying the belkin scsi to firewire converter, but I am not sure if I need a whole new scsi card brand instead.
I will keep you posted.

Download Hamick's VueScan (v.8 for OSX, lower version for OS9). Try before you buy, but check the list of supported scanners first. I used it on my Quicksilver G4 +Adaptec 2906 card it and it was better than Umax's own software.

I have the same issue with a saphir ultra 2. Works fine on 9, is lost in os X.
If someone found the answer to resolve this headache please let me know what you did to fix it.
My email is valgarcia@oragrafix.com
Thanks

I have the same problem with my Linotype-Hell Opal Ultra, Adaptec 2906 SCSI Card and Silverfast AI 6.1
the SCSI card is displayed in OS 10.3.4 system profiler – but just as a PCI card, not as a SCSI device!
The software is connecting to the scanner but I am only able to produce prescans...
If I am scanning with a higher resolution than 150 dpi, the computer freezes with a giant kernel panic...
damm!

I've been using a Saphir Ultra 2 for a few years now with good results. I'm thinking about switching from PageMaker to InDesign in the near future which would require OS X. Your posted problems have me a little nervous about the transition. Has anyone tried the SilverFast software to get OS X to recognize the scanner?

Don,
Silverfast 6 works very well on my jaguar system, but you may have to change your scsi card to a newer model (form factor for G5), or update the firmware (G4). I have some IO issues where full colour scanning forces the G4 to require a manual shut down and restart.

I using the following with no problems as Photoshop Import Plugin.
OS X (10.3.4)
Linotype Saphir2 v1.4
Adaptec 2930CU
SilverFast 6.0.2 r20
I've used the same setup in 10.1 and 10.2 with no problems.
I might have access to a 2906. I'll test and repost results.
Been using a UMAX Poerlook III in OS 9.2.2 with Magicscan 4.5 on a G3, for a couple of years with no problems. We are now moving to Panther (10.3.4) and my system profiler doesn't even see the SCSI card!
It's an Adaptec "ADPT,2930CU" . At home I have the same set up but only using Jaguar (10.2.8) with Silverfast 6.0. seems to be OK but occasionally quits when scanning grayscale.
Work: G3 12 & 80gb HD, 768 mb RAM, OS 9.2.2 on the 12, and OS X 10.3.4 on the 80. w/Adobe CS Premium
Main production work is still done in OS 9 until all issues are resolved, which may never happen.
Home: G3 (with Sonnet G4-500 CPU) 8 & 60gb HD OS 10.2.8 on the 8 and OS 9.2.2 on the 60
Both have the identicle UMAX Powerlook III scanners and both are SCSI.
Home works, Work doesn't
I guess Panther really has some issues to clear up!!!!
