I have a UMAX Astra 610P on my IBM Net Vista computer with Windows 98SE as the operating system. Everytime I attempt access my scanner, I get a gpf and am forced to reboot unless I am in safe mode. I have tried every fix that I have been advised to try by UMAX without success. This includes removing the scanner from my system, uninstalling the program and downloading the upgraded program and reinstalling.
If anyone has an idea of what I can do that will allow me to scan without having to go to safe mode and saving the scan in c:\windows/temp/tif, please let me know. You can respond, either in this forum or directly to me at RevLRM@arbuckleonline.com.
Thanks

We do not know what Umax has advised you to do, what driver files you have installed, nor how your computer is setup, eg: parallel port bios settings, hardware, etc. And we won't until you provide such information... saying I have tried everything Umax suggests, including removing unknown files, reinstalling unknown drivers, getting a gpf is not adequate information that will allow us to help. Sorry but you have given us nothing to work with.

My computer is an IBM NetVista 866megahertz Intel Pentium III. I have a 32 kb primary memory cache, 256 secondary memory cache. It has a 29.97 gb usable HD with 21.56 GB free space. I have an IBM-DTLA-307030 harddrive and a HP CD-Wroter+8200a [CD-ROM drove}, a Samsung CD-ROM SC-14F and a generic floppy diskdrive (3.5"). The controllers are: Standard Floppy Disk Controller, Primary IDE controller (single fifo), Secondary IDE controller (single fifo), Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller, Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller. The display is: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 (IBM) [Display adapter], IBM G78 [Monitor]. The Bus adapters are Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller and an unknown device.
What UMAX suggested was that I uninstall all Umax applications using their Uninstall program. Following removal, go to my regedit.exe and remove all references to Umax, VstaScan, Vista 601p, etc. They also sent me their Record SC00028, last modified 03/26/03, but it was of no help.
As stated in my initial post, if I access the scanner from Safe Mode, I am able to scan a document or photo into a c:\windows\tmp.*.tif file and then open this file in normal mode. However, if I attempt to open the scanner in normal mode, I get first a series of gpf messages, after which my computer locks up completely and I have to do a cold reboot before I can do anything else.
I hope this additional information helps you in determining what my problem is. If yes, I appreciate any advice you can provide that will allow me to resolve it.

Rather than booting in safe mode, use msconfig, selective startup, uncheck the box "load startup group items" ... ok reboot computer. You may have other programs running that are causing your problem. If this fixes the problem then try to figure out which running application is causing the problem and then deal with that particular program/application. Alternately, you can drag all items out of the START box into a temp folder, then put them back in one at a time testing system after each has been inserted... if you find one that causes the problem then you have isolated which program is possibly causing the problem. :)
