I've lost sound in a custom built machine (by someone else) after performing AV and Anti-Spyware scans. No conflict in the device mgr, just wondering if there was a better driver...

Speakers do not require any drivers unless they are connected via usb. A good set of speakers that work and a sound card with valid drivers installed will usually produce sound output.
