Billye 07-10-2004, 06:05 PM HELP!?!?! I'm losing it, i rarely have trouble but for some reason i am having a major brain fart with this. I have a SyQuest SQ3270 (270MB) drive which i just brought to replace an old one that died severial years ago. I was running 98SE but now i am running 2000 PRO, the book says that it will run under NT but does not say how to install it and everything i read says NT has built in support for SyQuest drives, including hot swaping the cartridges has of v4.0
My problem, i installed the drive on the IDE interface, made sure all jumpers on all drives were correctly set. (PrimaryIDEmaster1=80gighd, PrimaryIDEslave=SQ3270, SecondaryIDEmaster=56xCD-ROM, SecondaryIDEslave=DVD-ROM)
I booted up the system, w2k found new hardware, went to instaled drivers, required reboot, rebotted and now nothing. The system boots up fine and the system finds everything EXCEPT the SQ3270 drive. Everything there but no new drive. HOW do you install this drive? I read something somewhere saying that with NT (& w2k?) that you have some special things you have to do to install a new drive, is this true? i did nothing special when i installed the current HD other then clone the system from the old drive then re-edited the regestery so the new drive would boot the system drive has C: and not has G: (chuckles)
How can i get w2k to see this drive? there is a PC formatted cartridge in the drive, the BIOS sees the drive and id's it has the SyQuest SQ3270, but w2k does not see it. I do not care at this point if i have to reboot the system everytime i want to switch cartridges, i just want to get what one them off and transfered to the HD and to a USB CDRW.
I have tried searching Google but i can not seem to find much of anything on this drive and NT, other then, follow the NT documation to install your drive.
Thanks you all for your help in advance.
Billye

first of all, windows 2000/XP while based on the NT4 code base a "is" not NT4. while more is common than is diffrent between the code bases there do exist major diffrences in hoe things work between w2k and NT.
your syquest device will be seen as a normal IDE hard disk under w2k without drivers loaded to allow hot swapping.
if you have a blank cart, insert it into the unit, reboot and then use disk manager to prep the syquest and note the drive letter windows has assigned to the device. if you can not prep the unit then something is wrong and needs to be resolved before trying to read data off your other carts.
to use this device with hot swap ability, Adapted EzSCSI ver 5.0 RETAIL will allow the os to understand that this device is/uses removable media
i have use the IDE and scsi interface sq270's under w2k/xp without issues

In fact, they are even being provided by Syquest, the link for PC drivers take you the the SCM site and the link for MAC drivers take you to DriverZone, and has for their support section, all of their tech doc's, they are ALL TOTALLY GONE, remove from the system, nothing, nada, no more.

at a wild guess, do you have any devices such as usb or card readers installed? windows will have issues with assigning a device leter if you have the above installe. although it will show the device in disk manager.
i recomend that you disconnect the other devices on the ide chanell and only connect the syquest. then confirm it is seen in the bios. if so use a w98 boot disk and break the boot so you stay in dos prompt then run a w98 fdisk and see if fdisk sees the device. if so then windows 2000 will and if having issues you know it's a software not hardware issue.

yes, i have usb but my usb are onboard, intergrated into the mother board and not an ide add-on, i also have 2 card readers, a compact flash and a pc/mcia, but both of them are usb devices

i have comformed that the bios sees the syquest so many times i think i can manuver around the bios and change settings with my eyes closed. ;) now all i need to do is get me a boot floppy for 98 or 95, or how about DOS, i still have my original DOS install disks, i can use one of them. i just wish i could figure out why w2k is not seeing, or at least not showing the drive in disk manager. could it be be because i am using the 2 cpu version of PRO? (i got dual 1ghz Intel P3 Coppermines)
grrrrrr, i really want to get this drive working, thanks for all of the help and i am sorry if it took me a while to reply back, i am having some major trouble with my internet connection

AGAIN.....remove the usb devices, disconnect from the usb ports. as stated previously windows WILL have issues assigning a drive letter if usb devices that use drive letters are active. (both the usb device and the syquest will take the same drive letter) and you will then have to use device manager to manually change drive letters if you do not have the usb devices inactive.

opps, sorry about that, i was not clear, i have done that, my usb devices are ony pluged in and on when they are needed, even the printer is disconnected when not in use, i have the following usb devices( CF card reader, CDRW, digital camera, HP ink jet printer, an extra hub), when i first installed the drive i had all usb devices turned off and disconnected and still windozes does not find the syquest drive. I have even removed the drivers for a USB pc/mcia card reader that has never worked right (it will not read the 2 pc/mcia memory cards which i have for my old Zoomer PDA & my lap top), i also removed the drivers for the ZIP 250 drive that a friend of mine loaned me to transfer some files. the only hubs connected are the hubs that are physcially mounted on the mainboard, my board has 2 on board hubs, one physcially mounted on the back of the board beside the keyboard/mouse ports, an another which is in an unused drive bay, this one plugs in by a cable to a special header specificially for an
additional set of USB jacks, this gives me 2 usb jacks on the front has well has the 2 on the back, could this be the problem? i am to the point of totally uninstalling all the usb drivers for all deivces including the on board hubs (maybe i will try disabling them first), i just had a thought, i used drive manager to set specific drive letters for my usb drives to use, same with my IDE CD-ROM & DVD player, could this be the problem?
need to go now but before i go, thank you for all the help you have given me

while perhaps not directly related to your issue it is nontheless usefull information Read on...
standard IDE devices will not have drive letter issues, USB or devices assigned a drive letter will have issues. a common problem is people having a system with a usb card reader using a letter (say E:) with a C and a D internal hard drive everything works fine , they then add another ide drive...this drive will try to take the letter E because it's connected via IDE on the motherboard before windows loads the usb driver. now when windows loads the USB driver which was previous set at e it conflicts with the ide drive. the solution is to reassign one of the devices using drive manager. when done both units will show up. (a reboot may also be required)
and as mentioned above using logon scrips to map drive letters to folders/devices will aso exibit the same conflicts

i thought about that, good old DOS drive assignments, except that w2k does things alittle differntly, i will not go into that here, lets just say that it can get very interesting cloning a drive
anyway, i used drive manager reassigned my USB drives (CDRW & Combat Flash) to different drive letters, i also went ahead and reassigned my IDE CD-ROM & DVD drives to new drive letters, leaving a drive letter open for the syquest between my primary BOOT drive and the cd's. i even loaded the recovery console and use diskpart to check to see if it can see the drive and sure enough, it sees the syquest just fine, but boot on up into w2k and no dice, though it is listed in the regestry in the hardwahere section, even got it has the correct physcial drive on the correct interface, but go into drive manager and nada, no dice, nothing, and rescaning for drives or new hardware does nothing, i am about to the point of pulling the drive and just crying
anyway, i got to go

Billye Gilbert 01-04-2005, 09:35 PM SOLVED: It had NOTHING to do with the USB devices at all. Nope, not a thing. The problem turned out to be an IDE driver. Specificly the Intel Ultra ATA Driver. Load it and BLAM!, no useable SyQuest drive. Unload it and BLINK! it's back.
Thanks though for all the help you gave me.
