I'm assuming you are talking about Data Lifeguard program that WD offers for installing their drives. You omitted just about everything needed to help you.
1: You jumpered the drive HOW?

2: You connected it to WHAT?

3: You made what settings in the pc bios for ide port(s)?
Drives won't install or configure themselves automatically... you have to install it properly, connected it properly, jumper it accordingly, and make the correct settings in pc bios. Once you do (or tell us how you did it) then your drive should have no problems working. Your motherboard bios should also have support for large hard drives... if it doesn't then the drive overlay software will overcome that barrier.

Ok. Yes, I'm referring to Data Lifeguard software. I installed the disk as a slave to the primary i.e jumper in slave position. The primary is a Qantum 40GB. The PC auto detects the drive correctly on power-up as it displays the connected drives. I have done nothing to the BIOS manually. Data lifeguard sees the installed disks but can't identify either. It calls them Disk 1 and Disk 2. When I select Disk 2 (double click) the software replies 'not a western digital disk drive'.

this can be caused by improper master/slave settings. and can be caused by trying to use M/S settings in a system that is designed to use ONLY the cable select settings (dell/gateway systems are common offenders)
wrong settings in the bios for the drives (such as DMA or model settings)
less common (actually rare) is diffrent drives not liking each other however this does NOT APPLY in your case!! i know for a fact that these drives do work together.
remove the quantum, install just the WD unit see if the setup software sees the unit if not, then improper M/S setting/cables/bios settings or defective drive.
READ the WD site for trouble shooting

The idea was to back up my existing drive to the new drive before I did an upgrade to Win XP. I'm impatient so I went ahead and did the upgrade without the backup - it worked! Anyway once on XP the Data Lifeguard software worked fine, saw both disks (new and old) and setup and formatted the new drive fine. Thank god for small mercies! Thanks for your ideas (and this site) - it's great to have a BB for these kinds of problems.

Steve :)
