I am posting this solution here because I do not have to register.
Situation: Eumax Metal Gear USB/SATA won't work on XP.
Hardware: Old Athlon 1.5 ghz computer with a cheap add-on USB 2.0 card running XP Pro. Metal Gearbox has a Maxtor drive.
I thought at first it was the card. But I got the drive to work on a new computer running XP. I checked thru the system/hardware and logged what was different. Then I checked the Microsoft device driver dev site.
Here's how I solved the problem:
-XP has a system file, USBSTOR.SYS that needs to be loaded. This is the usb-mass drive device driver. Also there is a corresponding INF file called USBSTOR.INF.
I was missing this INF file. I copied the INF file from the other computer to $WINDOWS/system32/drivers.
Next I turned the device on. It popped up the hardware setup screen. I chose to manually select the device's driver, and navigated to the directory I copied USBSTOR.INF to. It loaded. That covered the USB protocol -- it shows up as "usb mass storage device" in the hardware profile.
Also, there are two drivers needed for the hard drive. This may or may not need to be done (i.e. the drive may need to be recognized automatically -- make SURE it is uninstalled) -- so I let the hardware wizard pop up -- needed to recognize my Maxtor drive. I chose "generic disk drive" (not exactly sure sorry) -- which loads DISK.SYS and PARTMGR.SYS for the hard drive. The machine had to be rebooted with the device off. Then the drive shows up under "disk drives" in the hardware manager.
Eumax support can blow me. This cost me a lot of hours. I post this reply because I believe a ton of people are having this problem. Also -- I think it is an MS XP problem -- that the Eumax "engineers" were too lazy to solve. Too bad, 'cause the box looks cool.
Buy an ACOM data drive instead, works flawlessly on everything.
