BIOS should automatically boot the floppy, but when it does, it comes up with the error:
Invalid system disk
Remove the disk, and then press any key

there is no disk in the drive, and i've tried many different boot disks, but still no luck. Does anyone know how to get past this error or at least get the floppy drive to boot correctly?

Thanks

have a look in the BIOS for the Boot Order

ie First boot device floppy drive

also check cables, are they in the right way.

Did you use format c:\s

this puts command.com on the hard drive so you can boot to c:
