Help please. I installed a Motorola Phanta Link V.92/56K PIC Intenal Modem in an old AT&T computer running WIN 98. When I restarted the system it found the hardware and I pointed it to the drivers to install. However, I was then prompted to restart and every time I try to run windows I now get the following error message "A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable. VFAT cannot continue working". I am then forced to restart windows in safe mode. In safe mode I cannot make any changes to the modem settings or anything else for that matter. In the control panel, modem setting, if I disable the modem I can then get Win 98 to run again. So clearly there is a compatibilty problem with the operating system. Any ideas. The modem box says it's minimum requirements is Win 95.

Thanks.

Please insure you modem has free resources to use... eg: irq, i/o address, com port. If it's a jumpered modem, then you must set the irq, i/o address, and com port to settings that are not already in use by other hardware devices. If it's a PNP modem then insure your pc has free resources for it to use. These can be found in Device Manager....

Also, your problem is addressed by Microsoft... read this page:
