goto start run regedit html local machine/microsoft/system/current user dont hit the + sign on current user just hit the name and your product id will appear or else you can have a piece of software called jellybean scan your registry and find it for you happy hunting

What I really need is a genric product id so I can load it on my computer. I forgot to write it down and it's not on the cd. Can you help

The only help that I can give is that if you are trying to re-install win98 on a machine that had win98 then you need to follow what cyberstate said. On the other hand if you have a problem and cant get into win98, as long as you havent deleted the system.dat hidden file in the windows directory you can boot to dos and edit the file and search for the product id. Should be farily easy to find.
