i wrote 4 days ago, re: my computer not recognizing my cd or dvd
roms.
i've registered but cannot log in for some reason.
i also checked previous msgs. and tried deleating upper and lower
filters, but it didn't fix the problem.
also tried your advise of using sysedit, but there wasn't anything
like that in those 2 files.
i've an ongoing email trade w/ emachines, they suggested what you
did with the filters.
when i told them it didn't work,
they suggested that i do a full system restore using the cd discs
that came with the computer.
duh...
tonight i emailed them back, stating that i would love to do a full
system restore, but how do i do that without a cd-rom?
i hope someone can help me.
thanks,
dan

hi dan,

were the drives working before and they just stopped? Was there something that happened just before they stopped working? new software or crash or something. Does it pick up the drives on boot-up.

If not it can be a hardware or bios issue if it does then it can be software. Just as a test you could get a win98se boot disk and reboot using the disk choosing to boot with cdrom drive if it works you know it is an software issue if not a hardware one.

If you are using separate drive or combined and both dont work you need to check the bios setup to see if the drive detection is set to auto or none.
If it just xp maybe us can try to update the atapi-cd drivers, you can download the latest from the net and see if that fixes the prob.
