"Windows default driver is inadequate"... how? What's wrong with it? That's the only Windows support available. There is nothing else except DOS drivers..that same one for Win 3.1. It will not help you in Windows 2000.
When properly connected/configured, the os should recognize the drive during bootup and a listing should appear in Device Manager under CD-ROM showing the drive. If the os fails to detect the drive, here are the most common reasons:
1: Improperly connected ide ribbon cable or defective cable/connectors.

2: Master/Slave jumper not set correctly.

3: Problem with the ide port to which the drive is connected or...

4: Wrong ide drivers installed.

5: IDE port is disabled in bios.

6: Improperly flashed firmware

7: Defective drive.
