Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from 95 up. Windows XP has the same native support that the older Windows os's do that allows this drive to read a data or music disk. In order to play dvd disks, compatible 3rd party dvd decoding software is required, eg: WinDVD or PowerDVD
