Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from 95 up. Windows ME provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk. Support for playing dvd disks comes from 3rd party compatible dvd decoding software like WinDVD or PowerDVD.
When the drive is properly connected/configured, the os should recognize the drive during bootup

and a listing should appear in Device Manager under CD-ROM showing the drive. If the os fails to

detect the drive, here are the most common reasons:
1: Improperly connected ide ribbon cable or defective cable/connectors.

2: Master/Slave jumper not set correctly.

3: Problem with the ide port to which the drive is connected or wrong ide drivers installed.

4: IDE port is disabled in bios.

5: Defective drive.
